ILOILO CITY – Four inmates were injured on Monday following a riot at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Ungka, Jaro district.
The incident also resulted in the sacking of the jail’s warden and the investigation of six jail guards.
Injured and brought to the Western Visayas Medical Center for treatment were:
* Jade Remuyo, 27, facing murder charges, stabbed
* Edison Pago, 33, facing frustrated murder charges, stabbed
* Rey Cataluna, 25, facing illegal drugs charges, sustained a laceration in the head
* Elmer Delgado, 34, wounded in the chest
Initial investigation showed the incident occurred while the inmates were discussing a commotion that marred their Christmas party Sunday night. The report said one of the inmates, Joel Barsibas, was angry that he was removed by Delgado as an informal adviser to their group.
Barsibas, who faces charges of frustrated murder, illegal drugs and illegal possession of firearms, reportedly took a pair of scissors from his cell and attacked Delgado at the basketball court. The supporters of both inmates then clashed.
The report said the incident resulted in the relief of the jail’s warden, and the investigation of the jail guards on how the scissor was smuggled into Barsibas’ cell. (with reports from www.gmanetwork.com)
