KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) -- The heavy rains, which flooded several towns and caused a landslide in Aklan on November, listed P10,051,400.00 in damages, according to the Damage Assessment Report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) here.
The heavy rains that occurred in the province wrought havoc on the province’s agriculture, infrastructure and public utilities.
Of the three areas, the agriculture sector suffered the highest, with P8,624,400 in damages, followed by infrastructure with P875,000; and utilities, P552,000.
The PPDRRMC reported two casualties – one Herminia Cuales of Bangbang, Balete, due to a landslide, and one Sergio Tociayao from Naligusan, Ibajay, due to CVA.Twelve persons were also reported injured – 1 in Balete and 11 in Ibajay. No missing persons were reported.
Sixty-two (62) houses were reported to be totally destroyed, with eight of these, according to the municipality of Kalibo, washed to the sea by the strong currents of the Aklan River at the height of the heavy rains.
The report also listed a total of 177 houses partially damaged, with 8,658 families affected, composed of 41,990 individuals.
The town of Madalag listed the biggest number of damages in terms of agriculture – with P337,665 and infrastructure, P250,000.
Meanwhile, Kalibo, the capital town, reported that five barangays were flooded with 2,870 families affected composed of 14,350 individuals.
Affected families from Poblacion Kalibo were evacuated to the ABL Sports Complex and the Aklan Catholic College (ACC) gym by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of Kalibo where the evacuees were fed and made to stay for a night.
The Poblacion evacuees, according to MSWDO-Kalibo, were also provided food, packs of rice, “trapals”, used clothing and cooking utensils.
Those whose houses were washed away, on the other hand, constructed temporary dwellings on the same area.
